Louis XIV style limestone mantel, circa 1810

Louis XIII style French Limestone Mantel, circa 1820

Louis XIV style French limestone Mantel with Trumeau, late 17th cen.

Sku code: ALCh434

Quick Overview

A scaled-down version of the massive late Renaissance type fireplaces, this lovely example of restrained Louis XIV style might be the answer for someone looking for a mantel and trumeau without excessive width. Generously rounded bolection molding surrounds the hearth opening and curves gracefully down the legs. Two bolection molded frames can be found on the trumeau: The lower one projects outwards a rectangular cartouche with scalloped sides, while the upper one is a larger variation resembling a scalloped edge frame. The curves of the molding are balanced by the bold tiered molding of the lintel shelf and cornice.

Did you know that the frames of trumeaus of this period might have held a coat of arms, or a painting? Later, wall clocks were a popular ornament.
