Louis XIV style limestone mantel, circa 1810

Sku code: ALCh 566

Quick Overview

This antique French limestone mantel demonstrates the classic Louis XIV style in the shape of both the traverse and the legs. Here one sees that the inside profile of the lintel has adopted the contour of a curved arc, or “crossbow” shape. The legs, or jambs, are fluted, and are wider at the top than at the base. The carved decor consists of rolled and flat paneled moldings on the massive traverse, which is centered by a generously sized coquille with volutes that extends like an apron into the top of the hearth opening.

Did you know? Limestone mantels of the Louis XIV period were often painted, as was this piece. Traces of the light-colored paint are still visible in some areas. Measurements are best effort. If fractions count, ask for a re-measure. Thank you for visiting Pittet Architecturals and remember to check back often for postings of new inventory.
