Pair of Unique Wrought Iron Cobirons, c.1800

Sku code: FX200

Quick Overview

This exceptional pair of hand wrought French cobirons is unique not only for their substantial size and removable spacer bar, but also for their impressive craftsmanship. Open baskets and globes are created from rope-twist and figure-eight knot designs, the upright standards feature “turnip” shaped finials, hammered and incised designs, and the footed bases are scrolled with leaf and ball finials. The removable bar has matching design motifs of open globes, scrolls and twist finials. A charming design feature reveals itself deep inside the upper cups: a fully bloomed rose finial is seated deep within.

Cobirons are an earlier form of andirons with utilitarian features. Hooks appear on the upright standards for placement of roasting spits, and the standards are topped with open baskets. The baskets were useful for lighting (holding vessels of burning oil), or for food preparation (holding porringers or bowls with broth or baste). May contain mixed metals. All descriptions and measurements are best estimates.
