French Limestone Mantel

A Louis XV period limestone mantel, mid-18th century, with a serpentine fronted molded shelf above an undulating carved and molded frieze. The frieze is centred with an asymmetrical open-work shell surrounded by scrolling acanthus leaves, and accented by the oblique rolled termini of the rounded molding. The pilaster style legs are semi-channelled; their tops feature incorporated corbels carved with undulating panel molding. This piece is carved from a fine-grained limestone with cream-grey tones, resembling Paris stone. The patina is consistent with age and use, as are minor losses to the frieze, shelf and legs.
