This oil painting of the Children Celebrates Purim is made by Ted GILIEN. Ted Gilien, born in 1914, is a native of Brooklyn. His media were painting and drawing. During the 1930's, he painted murals for federal arts projects, and following his experiences as a World War II combat artist. He completed a series of works on the "Horrors of War". He is equally well known for his series, "A visual History of the Maccabees" completed in 1960.

Purim is a Jewish Holiday which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman and Achaemenid Persian Empire official who was planning to kill all the Jews, as recounted for the book of Esther. Haman was the royal vizier to King Ahasuerus, and he planned to kill all the Jews in the Empire.
