This compact mantel is carved in the style of Louis XIV and is believed to date to the late 1700's. It is restained in form with doucine molding on the front of the traverse and legs. The inside profile of the hearth opening has an unusual scalloped shape at the upper angles. While the form may be simple, the marble from which it is carved is the the desirable and colorful type called "Brèche d'Alep." Predominately golden in color and characterized by the presence of large and varied colored stones in the matrix, Brèche d'Alep was a favorite of the Sun King himself, Louis XIV of France.
