Carrera Marble Statue of Raphael circa 1850

Sku code: ST2040

Quick Overview

Now missing an arm, finger and staff, this 19th century marble carving likely represents the archangel Raphael. Sacred as a healer in Christanity, Judism, and Islam, Raphael is frequently depicted as a young man with a trumpet, or likely here, a staff. This statue is a similar pose as Bartolomé Esteban Murillo's painting "Saint Raphael the Archangel." Both are winged youth, dressed in flowing garments. Their glance is downward, with left arms raised to hold the staff as they stir the healing waters of the pool at Bethesda. Carved billows flow in circle beneath the gowned feet of this statue, which terminates in a sqaure base. Because this marble statue spent decades outdoors, the patina is characteristically worn. Some cracks visible in base and arm. Minor loss to one wing tip.
