Antique Italian Portoro Black Marble Mantel (M-SALG)
Carved in France during the 19th century, this antique and reclaimed mantel is made from Portoro marble, a rare Italian stone prized for its deep black ground laced with bold golden veining. The dramatic contrast of the stone alone makes this a statement piece, but the detailing of the carving takes it further.
The mantel features a curved breakfront shelf that extends outward at the center, giving depth and presence to the profile. Beneath it, the frieze is richly paneled and centered with a hand-carved cartouche motif, flanked by symmetrical moldings that frame the arched opening.
The jambs (legs) are substantial and heavily detailed, with raised rectangular panels and circular medallions carved into each side. The paneled bases ground the piece with strength, while the vertical carvings draw the eye upward, emphasizing its grand proportions.
