Italian White Marble Sculpture of 'Le Triomphe D'Ariadne' by Jean-Baptiste Clesinger
Hand-carved Marble Sculpture of Ariadne on the Panther by Jean Baptiste Clesinger, circa, 1866.
In Greek mythology, Ariadne, the daughter of King Minos of Crete, fell deeply in love with Theseus. She aided his escape from the labyrinth and the Minotaur, only to be abandoned by him shortly after their elopement from Crete. Eventually, Ariadne married Dionysus, the god of wine. In this sculpture, she is depicted reclining on a panther and holding a bunch of grapes, both symbols associated with Dionysus.
This exquisite piece originates from Rome and was carved in 1866. It is crafted from white Carrara marble.
