Pair of Antique French Well Heads Planters (V-GWNQ)

A pair of 19th century French limestone well heads, originally used to frame and protect village water wells, now offering both history and sculptural presence. Each piece is open at the base, as traditional well heads were designed to sit directly over a well shaft, but they lend themselves beautifully today as substantial vessels for planting florals, greenery, or even small trees. The octagonal form is richly carved with layered bands of decorative detailing — from scalloped edging beneath the top rim to repeating linear motifs and arched relief panels along the lower register. Centuries of exposure have left behind softened edges, surface pitting, mineral staining, and traces of lichen, all contributing to their authentic aged patina. The limestone has developed a warm, weathered tone with subtle tonal variation throughout, highlighting every carved groove and raised detail. Solid, architectural, and full of character.
