French Marble Mantel
M30057Louis XIV Style Brèche d'Alep Marble Mantel, circa 18th Century
This petite chamber-sized mantel is carved in the style of Louis XIV with doucine molding on the front of the traverse and of the legs. The shelf front and sides demonstrate 1.25" ogee molding with rounded corners that are mirrored by the semi-rounded shape of the feet. The inside profile of the hearth opening is scalloped at the upper angles. The flat panel relief carvings on the lintel above both legs are characterized by scalloped shapes and right angles. Brèche d'Alep marble has been quarried in the French Pyrenees for centuries and is characterized by the presence of large and varied colored stones in the matrix. Predominately golden in color, generous pieces of gray, red, and beige stones add to its distinctive appearance.
